How to Measure Attics According to NEN 2580
Measuring attics can be challenging. Attics often have sloped ceilings or limited accessibility, making it difficult to determine how much of the space should count as usable area. NEN 2580 divides attics into three categories: non-accessible, storage attics, and habitable attics.
1. Non-Accessible Attics
Attics that cannot be accessed are excluded from the measurement. This applies to attics reachable only via a hatch, those with no walkable floor, or spaces designed to be inaccessible.
2. Storage Attics
A storage attic is classified as “other internal space.” This applies in the following cases:
- The attic is accessible only via a folding ladder or similar non-permanent staircase.
- There is less than 0.5 m² of daylight entering through skylights or windows. The transparent glass area is calculated for this purpose.
3. Habitable Attics
An attic qualifies as usable residential area if it meets the following criteria:
- It has a fixed staircase.
- It allows at least 0.5 m² of daylight through skylights or windows.
- The space is structurally suitable for living, including insulation and climate control.
4. Height Limitations
Ceiling height also plays a role:
- Areas with a height of less than 1.5 meters are excluded.
- Only spaces with a height of 2 meters or more qualify as usable residential area.
By following these rules, you can determine which parts of the attic count and how they should be categorized.
